Academic Subject Certificate in Sustainability
What is the Sustainability Certificate?
“The benefit of having faculty teach sustainability courses across multiple academic disciplines, and across all the community college campuses, is that it allows a great deal of flexibility for students to customize the areas of focus that make up their Academic Subject Certificate,” said Erika Lacro, vice president for community colleges. The certificate, which is similar to earning a minor in sustainability, requires between 12 and 16 credits and can be earned entirely online. Courses from different campuses can apply. Some campuses also offer a capstone experience that allows students to focus on a project or passion that they wish to develop.

Citizen Forester Program
The Citizen Forester Program educates community members as volunteer citizen scientists to map urban trees and add to your community’s tree inventory while raising awareness on the importance of caring for trees where we live. The program was piloted in 2016 in the town of Kailua on Oahu and has now expanded to many other communities across the state!
~Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources
As part of our program, volunteers collect location data, specific tree measurements, and tree condition assessments for trees in the city’s right of way. Our inventory is stored on the Tree Plotter TM platform, which calculates the estimated eco-benefits for the recorded trees. Training is required to equip Citizen Foresters with tree identification, planting, care, and monitoring knowledge so they can perform their volunteer duties safely and effectively. Some of these programs can be elaborate, with different levels of training and certification required depending on the tree care and monitoring tasks.
