DIAMOND HEAD KEIKI CENTER (SALVATION ARMY FAMILY TREATMENT SERVICES)
The Salvation Army Therapeutic Nursery cares for infants and toddlers between the ages of 2-weeks and 2 years. These are the children of mothers in “Women’s Way,” the Salvation Army’s residential substance abuse treatment program. Diamond Head Preschool, also on the same campus, serves these same families as well as the general community by caring for children ages 2 to 5 years old.

Service Opportunity:
    
In the Therapeutic Nursery, service-learners help infants based on the child’s individuals needs and goals. Service-Learners get hands-on with the babies, by holding, playing with and feeding them.  They engage them in gross-motor and other activities (sitting and rolling) to help with skill-building and soothing.  No diaper-changing or cleaning involved.

     In the Preschool, activities with the children may include: gardening, fine motor activities, learning through art, multi-sensory, assisting with class/teacher led activities, social-emotional development, help coach children in using their words, making friends, manners, etc.

(1) Application; Interview with Parent/Child Services Manager and Reference Checks

FAMILY PROGRAMS HAWAII

Service Opportunity:
     
1) Bring together siblings who are in foster care for monthly visits. Includes scheduling, pick-up, drop off, visits.

     2) Resource Family Child Care Assistant:  Provide care and supervision for children ages 3-12 years old, in a group setting that is safe, nurturing and supportive of their foster care placement.  Support groups are held in Waianae, Halawa and Kailua.
     3) Temporary Shelter Volunteer : Read, do crafts and conduct activities and mentor children who have been removed from their homes due to possible abuse or neglect.  Other duties include keeping the temporary shelter running smoothly.

KAWANANAKOA MIDDLE SCHOOL

Service Opportunity: Volunteer at a public middle school helping children who are learning English as a new language (many of our students within the English Language Program come from China, the Philippines, or other countries in the Pacific). Duties would include assisting student in understanding class assignments and homework, helping student to take notes during lessons, modeling successful student behavior: arriving to class on time, highlighting important information, completing assignments, asking questions of teacher/or participating in classroom discussions. You do NOT need to speak their language, we will show you how to support our students.

Service Opportunity: Currently recruiting volunteers to join our ʻĀINA In Schools (Actively Integrating Nutrition and Agriculture In Schools) docent teams for our partner schools on Oʻahu. We will train docents to teach nutrition lessons for grades 2 and 6, and garden or compost lessons for Grades K, 1, 3, 4 or 5. Docent teams will teach these hands-on, cross-curricular, standards-based lessons one day a month at a school assigned to convenient for them, no experience necessary! We ask for a school year long (Aug-May) commitment. If you value the importance of teaching the next generation how to make healthy food choices and how to grow their own food, then you will find being a member of an ʻĀINA In Schools docent team very rewarding, fun and educational! Service Opportunity: Mentoring, tutoring and assistance with special programs for all ages, family nights, teen evenings. Room for creativity and for service-learning student-driven special projects - both indoors and outdoors. On the wish list: projects with STEM emphasis. This semester, we are completing the Pālolo wa'a (canoe) based in traditional Oceanic Islander knowledge and practices (in collaboration with the Ka Holo Wa'a program) and may also arrange community garden and clean-up (in collaboration with the MINA program). SURFRIDER SPIRIT SESSIONS
Service Opportunity: Be a surf mentor for at risk youth

Service Location: Waikiki Beach

Requirements:
     -Must be intermediate level (or better) surfer, comfortable in the water, and confident enough to offer basic surf guidance and support.
     -Able to commit to 4 or 8 consecutive Saturdays, 4 hours each
     -Able to attend a one 4-hour orientation at 902 Alder Street by Piikoi and King Street
     -Clean, sober and drug-free
     -Minimum of 23 years of age
     -Dedicated, reliable, outgoing, caring, and patient
     -A willingness to mentor outside the program is a plus

​Service Opportunity: Waikiki School Food Farm

Service Location: Waikiki School: 3710 Leahi Ave., at the corner of Monsarrat and Leahi.  

Requirements:  Have an interest in learning about sustainable agriculture or a strong interest in teaching using the school garden.  Volunteers must be prompt, consistent, have a positive attitude and good interpersonal skills. There are two opportunities, 1) supporting the food farm through physical activities such as weeding, mulching, digging, harvesting and pruning, and 2) supporting garden lessons involving students in grades 3-5 or ages 7-10.

Sustainable Agriculture Methods
Wednesdays:  9:00-12:00- Learn about sustainable agriculture in a school garden. Interns will get hands on experience learning about sustainable methods in the school garden garden including bed preparation, composting methods, irrigation systems and plant propagation techniques.
Limited to 4 volunteers.

School Garden Classes (Working with students in grades 3-5)
Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays: 12:00-2:00pm- Support garden lessons with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Activities might include plant propagation, harvesting and food preparation, or other garden a activities. Volunteers should have an interest in working with young children and a willingness to lead small groups of students.  Limited to 2 volunteers per day.

Thursdays 2:30- 4:00pm - Support an after-school class called “Garden Projects” for students in grades 3-5. An interest in using gardens for exploring the arts would be a plus. An interest in working with young students and a positive attitude required. Limited to 2 volunteers.

The Green House mission
The Mission
Started in 2004 by Betty and Mike Gearen, The Green House mission is to educate children, adults and communities in adopting healthy sustainable living practices that build on traditional knowledge with respect for the ‘aina.  
Since its inception, The Green House has connected with over 4,500 young people in 40 public, private and charter schools on Oahu and a variety of other community partners.
