Service learners in the Intercultural Perspectives & Identities Pathway help students understand the growing need for collaborative efforts to promote mutual awareness and solve problems locally, nationally, and globally. Kapi‘olani Community College has a diverse student body representing various cultures and nations of the world. This diversity gives students a unique opportunity to engage in intercultural exchange as a part of their college experience.
Students experience the manifestations of culture in the community by participating in activities that emphasize exchanges of beliefs, practices, values, mores, language, and religion. Examples of service include the International Cafe, language tutoring of peers on the KCC campus, language learning support for students at public schools, and Project SHINE to promote cultural integration of immigrants.

PROJECT S.H.I.N.E. *** OPEN AND ACCEPTING SERVICE LEARNERS *** (UPDATED 07/17/23)
Project SHINE (Students of Hawaiʻi for Inclusion & Newcomer Empowerment!) is continuing to offer English tutorial services on Zoom, and most of our learners are young refugees. We are also working with adult learners, and as needed, we can offer citizenship tutoring.
Our partners share that there is a great need for these services in West Maui, and SHINE is a great way for us to connect with the community there, without needing to book any flights. We also have an opportunity to support the middle school students in our neighboring Pālolo valley. To do all of this, we really need you!
Please help us reach out to your students who might choose SHINE as their service-learning or volunteer project!! This Fact Sheet should be helpful for planning/integration purposes.
We’d love to work with you to fulfill your service-learning goals!
You’re very welcome to join us on Saturdays (9:30–11:30).
Please read our fact sheet, attached below.
If you'd like to proceed with the commitment:
1. Please register using the instructions in the fact sheet (Use the Google Form link toward the end).
